WISDOM TEETH
Wisdom teeth can erupt (emerge from the bone and gum) anywhere from the age of 16 years and above. In some cases, they may stay within the bone forever and not cause any issues.
It is important for the dentist to take an x-ray of the wisdom teeth to check a few things…
The positioning of teeth and whether there is space for them to erupt
If there are any signs of infections or cysts
Whether the wisdom teeth are affecting the surrounding teeth
If removal is needed or possible in a general dental setting or if referral to an oral surgeon is necessary
Sometimes a wisdom tooth comes only part way through, leaving a flap of gum half covering the tooth. This can trap plaque and bacteria underneath causing inflammation, pain. This inflammation is called acute pericoronitis.
