EXTRACTIONS

Give yourself time to heal

After a dental extraction it generally takes six weeks for the socket to heal properly. However, for medically compromised patients and smokers it may take longer than six weeks.

Here are a few tips:

  • Begin brushing gently around the extraction site the next day.

  • Start rinsing gently with a warm salt water (1/2 teaspoon salt in a cup of water) mouthwash 24 hours after the extraction.  Do this after meals and before bed.

  • Do not smoke for minimum 72 hours.  Smoking will cause a dry socket and extreme pain.  Please wait as long as possible before smoking.

  • Do not drink alcohol after the extraction.  Alcohol will cause greater bleeding.

  • When bleeding occurs apply pressure to the socket and sit still for at least 10 minutes.

  • Do not exercise heavily for 48 hours.
